Tribe Ghana - Days 1 & 2
We are finally settled into our house in Tamale, Ghana after
a full day of travelling.
Yesterday morning we met at
Heathrow airport with everyone in high spirits. We were introduced to our Madrichim
Jono and Gemma and waved goodbye to our Tzedek leader Ben before running off to
find a much needed caffeine boost. We were ready to go!
After seven months of planning we
were excited to see what this adventure would bring. The flight was tiring but
failed to dampen our mood. We found a spot at the back of the plane where we
chatted endlessly and got to know each other even better.
As the plane landed in Accra (the
capital of Ghana) we walked off the plane and were hit by the humidity. We
arrived to an unfamiliar airport that had queues which felt like forever.
However, we were entertained by the live African music (including a pianist
playing two keyboards) whilst waiting for our bags. When we walked out the
airport we experienced our first true taste of Ghana. Cars hooting horns, and
people shouting in contrasting directions. Luckily Genna and Jaward (the Tzedek
staff on the ground) were on hand to help us. They guided us through the
bustling streets.
We were driven by Dominic (our bus driver) to Chabad Ghana where we were treated to a New York style barbecue by Rabbi Noach, which was delicious! It was a beautiful house and the evening gave us a chance to introduce ourselves and get to know our new Ghanaian leaders through fun games. We left the barbecue fully satisfied and excited to see what the next few days would bring.
Friday morning we were woken bright
and early at an apparently ‘reasonable hour’ in order to catch a flight. It was
the smallest plane any of us had ever been on. After a short 45 minute flight
we landed in a rural and humid region called Tamale. The airport was about the size
of a restaurant in Heathrow and we received our luggage by hand (no conveyor
belt!). Now we understood what we were really in for.
We have now arrived at
the Tzedek house and having been fed and watered by our leaders. Tonight is
Shabbat and we are buzzing to see what the weekend along with the rest of the
trip will bring.
